Your First Luxury Cruise: What to Consider Before Booking
A note from Suzy Soussou

Your first luxury cruise should feel exciting. Yet with beautiful ships, appealing itineraries, and different fare options to compare, knowing where to begin can be difficult.
Having sailed on luxury river and ocean cruises myself, I look beyond the photographs. I consider how the journey will feel: the pace, the atmosphere, the time ashore, and the details that make traveling comfortable.
Before you book, these are the questions I would encourage you to consider.
1. What kind of experience do you want?
Start with how you enjoy traveling. Do you love historic towns, local food, and days immersed in culture? Are you imagining relaxed mornings at sea, leisurely dinners, and time to enjoy your ship? Or are you drawn to nature, wildlife, and a more adventurous journey?
Think about what makes a vacation satisfying for you. A beautiful ship is one part of the decision; its daily rhythm should suit your interests and energy.
2. Would you prefer a river, ocean, or expedition cruise?
A river cruise may appeal if you enjoy a journey organized around towns, cities, and time ashore. Consider which region interests you and how much guided touring you want.
A small luxury ocean cruise may suit you if you are drawn to coastal destinations and want a balance of exploration and life onboard. Look at the ship’s atmosphere, dining choices, and mix of port days and sea days.

River cruising can bring the scenery and character of a destination into the journey itself.
An expedition cruise is another option if nature, wildlife, and discovery are central to your interests. For a first expedition, I would discuss the planned activities, physical demands, comfort onboard, and how flexible you are about changes to the itinerary.

If an expedition interests you, ask what a typical day might involve and which activities suit your comfort level.
The right choice depends on what you want from the journey. I compare the actual itinerary, ship, and daily schedule before making a recommendation.
3. Does the itinerary give you the experience you imagined?
A destination name can draw you in, but look closely at the time you will actually spend there. When does the ship arrive and depart? How far is the port from the places you want to visit? Are there overnight stays? How many sea days are included?
My own arrival on the Amalfi Coast reminded me how much the approach and timing can shape a travel memory. Seeing a destination from the water and having time to enjoy it can be just as meaningful as checking it off a list.
For an expedition, I would also ask how comfortable you are with a less predictable daily schedule and what you most hope to experience. A thoughtfully chosen itinerary should reflect the places and moments that matter to you.
4. What is included in your particular fare?
Before comparing prices, compare the details. Ask about shore excursions, beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, flights, and transfers. Check whether any benefits depend on your fare package or cabin category.
For an expedition cruise, also ask which activities and equipment are included and which require an additional reservation or payment.
Consider the full journey: hotels before or after the cruise, additional touring, and transportation between the airport, hotel, and ship. I encourage clients to consider the complete trip cost alongside what they value most, rather than comparing the advertised cruise fare alone.
5. Which cabin will suit you?
The most expensive cabin is not automatically the right one for your trip. Consider how much time you expect to spend there, whether a private balcony matters to you, and how much space you need to feel comfortable.
Location, layout, and proximity to public areas also deserve attention. If you are traveling solo, compare the total fare for one guest and the available cabin options early in the planning process. Your cabin should support the way you want to travel.
6. How will the journey come together beyond the ship?
A cruise booking is one part of a larger trip. Your arrival plans, hotel location, transfers, and time before or after sailing all influence the experience.
I like to discuss these details from the beginning, so the journey feels thoughtfully connected. At Lavish Experience Travel, I help you consider the ship, itinerary, accommodations, and surrounding arrangements together, with your preferences guiding the choices.
